Stripping Painted Surfaces            Tips From The Pro

These are the procedures that we use at The Wooden Boat Shop here in Cincinnati. Note: Make sure you are wearing eye protection and rubber gloves. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area. Dispose of all your waste properly.

1. Remove all hardware, chrome, etc. form the areas to be stripped.
2. Apply the paint stripper by brushing in one direction only.
3. Establish at least three progressive works areas while you are stripping. For example, one you just applied, one that is soaking and one from which you are removing the paint or varnish. In that way, you can get the job done in a timely manner. Remember, finish one section before you begin the next.
4. Use a three-inch wide putty knife or broad knife with rounded corners so you won't dig into the wood. Use a file or bench grinder to round the corners.
5. As you scrape off the paint, make sure it does not hit your trailer fenders or frame.
6. Collect all removed paint into a metal container with a lid. When finished for the day, place your can outside making sure the lid is secured. You do not want to risk the chance of spontaneous combustion. Make sure children or animals cannot access the container.
7. Dispose of all waste material properly. Call your waste management company to find out where to take it.
8. When stripping is finished, sand all surfaces with 60 grit, 80 grit, and finally 120 grit sandpaper.
